Fleet Air Arm Commemorates Black Tot Day in Weymouth

On Friday 1 August, the Weymouth Working Men’s Club (fondly known as Weymouth Workies) came alive as sixty members of the Weymouth and Portland branch of the Fleet Air Arm Association gathered to mark Black Tot Day, the historic date when the Royal Navy issued its final daily rum ration, 31 July 1970.

The evening was a rich blend of tradition, humour, and camaraderie. The event began with a ceremonial call to order at 19:30, inviting all to reflect on the significance of the tot in naval history. Many in attendance remembered the day itself, and their funny, heartfelt stories about life in the Navy during that era set the tone for an evening of laughter and nostalgia.

The programme included a light-hearted “funeral” for the tot, complete with a rum coffin, pallbearers, and tongue-in-cheek tributes, reminding everyone that while the tot may be gone, its spirit lives on. Following the procession, members enjoyed a lively naval-themed quiz, with rounds covering Royal Navy history, ships, RN sport, and rum traditions. The quiz proved both challenging and entertaining, thanks to the cruel work of the quiz team.

Of course, no Black Tot commemoration would be complete without rum. Thanks to the generosity of Black Ven Rum Distillers in Lyme Regis, led by Head Distiller John Tucker, guests were able to sample a fine oak-aged dark rum, which received glowing reviews from the members. A range of mixers, cheeses, and non‑alcoholic options ensured there was something for everyone.

Throughout the night, members raised toasts, some solemn, others humorous, honouring naval heritage, shipmates past and present, and the enduring bonds of the Fleet Air Arm. The “splice the mainbrace” moment was particularly memorable, as glasses were raised in unison to the sound of laughter and cheers.

Adding even greater significance, the event raised over £500 for Weldmar Hospice care, the chosen charity for 2025 and a cause close to the hearts of the members. The evening closed with hearty thanks to all the volunteers who made it possible, including Dave Buckley, Bob Longden, Dave Bland, and Tony Boyle, and with a promise to make Black Tot Day an annual highlight of the branch calendar.

The Weymouth and Portland branch of the Fleet Air Arm Association continues to uphold its traditions, celebrate its camaraderie, and support the wider community. Black Tot Day 2025 demonstrated that even after 55 years, the spirit of the tot and the Fleet Air Arm remains as strong as ever.
